What an incredible experience! I would need a new pair of shorts after this encounter. Each gorilla family has a Silverback as leader, who scares away other animals. Gorillas take direct eye contact as a sign of aggressive dominance, and they act on any threat or challenge. By not giving eye contact the man was showing submissiveness so the Silverback would know he wasn’t a threat to him or his family. That is also why the man didn’t stand up, that would have been a grave mistake. It seems like the Silverback was just looking for one wrong move. Did you see how he swept the baby away at first? There are two populations of silver back gorilla remaining within four national parks in Africa. One population of roughly 340 gorillas lives within the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The other one, of approximately 380 gorillas, lives within a mountainous region known as the Virungas. Gorillas are endangered animals. Their habitat is being destroyed because of farming and deforestation. Gorillas are also killed by poachers and sometimes get caught in poacher’s snares meant for other animals.
