This island is approximately 5 km (3 mi) long and 1 km (0.6 mi) wide. Since the 1950s, the island has been home to a small community of artists, and has its own art gallery. Respecting the tradition, Tory islanders choose a “king” by consensus. The king has no formal powers, but plays a role of a spokesperson for the community, he also welcomes people to the island. Doogie the Dolphin welcomes people as well. Dolphins are known for their communication skills, and also for the unique healing ability. Dolphin therapy appeared in the 1970s and has grown in popularity ever since. It beneficial to people suffering from physical and mental disabilities. Working with dolphins has helped improve the motor skills of disabled children, helped some autistic children to start communicating, children with learning disabilities have shown improvement after engaging in dolphin therapy. This alternative therapy have brought amazing positive results where other forms of treatment, both conventional and alternative, have failed.
